Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise was a great influence on her enthusiasm for the arts and her creative side. DuVernay worked as an evening nurse in order to give her aunt the time she needed throughout the day to indulge in the passion of literature, art, and theatre. DuVernay instantly fell in love after showing her the 1961 West Side Story film. DuVernay was taught by her the power of art as an instrument for social activism. DuVernay's mother also had a the social sensitivity and taught DuVernay how to convey messages via artwork. DuVernay, who grew up together with her parents in Compton and spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama in the family home of her father. The father of DuVernay's recollects seeing the historical march of the Civil Rights Movement over the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was held in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay was inspired by her summers in Alabama to help inspire her future film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. After graduation, she studied at the University of California Los Angeles and earned degrees both in English as well as African American study. DuVernay began producing for broadcast journalism while she was still in college. Her career began as an assistant for CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was assigned to the watch and search the home of a particular member of the Jury. She was disappointed by the journalism assignments she was assigned and chose to switch over to the public relations industry. DuVernay began her professional career as a junior assistant to publicity for a film studio that was small following her graduation from the college. In this role, she launched her own PR company named The DuVernay Agency in 1999. In addition to PR, the company has launched lifestyle networks and promotions, like Urban Beauty Collective.
